Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) has launched a multifaceted campaign as it marks its 60-year anniversary.

Dubbed, ‘Humanity Needs You’, the six-month campaign includes an aggressive membership recruitment drive; blood donation sensitisation and collection, road safety education, first aid training especially in schools, resources collection and general media blitz.

Addressing the media at URCS headquarters in Lubaga, Kampala, the secretary general Robert Kwesiga said the campaign already has two key partners on board – the Vision Group and Nation Media Group. He called on other stakeholders such as captains of industry and educational institutions to join the noble campaign aimed at serving humanity.

Kwesiga said the campaign will also promote a number of URCS programmes that benefit Ugandans in many ways. URCS was set up by an Act of parliament in 1964, following Uganda’s assent to the Geneva Conventions. Though partly funded by government, it carries out its operations independently.

“Since then, and through the many emergencies and crises in our country, URCS has been at the forefront of saving lives, building resilient communities and promoting human dignity. We call upon every Ugandan to join us in this noble mission. Join as a member, a volunteer, an
ambassador and a blood donor, among others,” he urged.

Kwesiga appealed for support in any form and quantity.

“We intend to use the power of media to further create awareness about URCS interventions, but also to raise more resources to sustain our programmes. We will target different categories of people for each campaign segment so that we don’t leave out anyone. The corporate can give money or volunteer their time and skills to serve; the youth can donate blood, join our mobilisation activities, champion climate change and environmental initiatives, or engage in community service, among others,” he said.

The climax of the campaign will include a comprehensive publication about URCS activities, and the launch of a Red Cross humanitarian fund, whereby anyone can donate any amount using MTN mobile money or other means that will be disclosed to the public. Kwesiga said the humanitarian fund will be managed by a reputable international trust and be subject to audit for accountability.

He justified creation of this fund as the need to be self-sustaining in the midst of declining external sponsorship.

“Big economies are also having problems in their own backyards, such as the wars in Ukraine and Palestine. So, it’s well advised to set up the humanitarian fund largely financed by Ugandans so that we don’t have to cry every now and then as an emergency comes in.”
